Wireless Communication

Edition 1.2 (Vol. 1 No. 2)

Welcome to the second edition of "Wireless Communication, the Interactive Multi-Media CD ROM." This edition includes many new contributions as well as revisions of existing material. In response to several reaction, we have made navigation through this CD ROM more convenient by providing at the top of each page a link to the "chapter page" and to "section pages".

What's new in this edition?

We are providing new files only in .au file format. The .mp3 file format will be phased out.
Audio interviews at U.C. Berkeley with Bob Brodersen, Randy Katz cover wireless computing, spectrum allocation policy issues and power conservation. John Davis discusses propagation channels measurements in the Cory Hall building at U.C. Berkeley. An audio clip from Louis Yun covers power control. Frits Schoute presents Dynamic Frame Length ALOHA.
You will find more in-depth html pages in this issue. Joseph Kahn contributed on wireless infrared communication. Jason Lin elaborated the material on CDPD. Ralph Haas (ENST Paris) provided us with samples of the Rayleigh fading channel, showing its evolution in time and its dependance on carrier frequency.
New material is included about IS95, MMDS, satellite systems, a proprietary datacast system using teletext capacity in television broadcasting, propagation at 60 GHz, how to measure a Rician channel, channel modeling and many other topics. Many pages have been improved and rewritten.
This version also contains Java applets, e.g. Jesse de Does developed one to demonstrate Rayleigh fading. Also, several analog modulation methods are presented with animated phasor diagrams. Further extension of these animations is foreseen in future editions.
This version contains more PC windows executables, e.g. on the Erlang B formula for telephone blocking and on the effect of interference in cell planning.

The Wireless Communication CD ROM introduces you to the exciting world of modern personal communications.

As the editor of this journal, I am very pleased with the response from authors who submitted excellent material to this edition. I am looking forward to hearing from other prospective authors in near future. As you will see from this edition, submissions of all kinds are welcome. We not only appreciate research results, but also class notes, exercises, worked examples, photographs, sound clips, electronic designs, java applets, handy executables etc.
