My infopad research involves the design and implementation of the single-chip, silicon CMOS gigahertz band radio frequency transceiver capable of supporting fifty users running in parallel each transmitting at 2 megabits/second, resulting in a total raw data bandwidth in excess of one hundred megabits/second, while minimizing power consumption - currently targeted at 100 milliwatts - in the mobile unit to extend battery lifetime; being a scaled version of the IS-95 Qualcomm cellular code division multiple access standard, we are exploiting the properties of spread-spectrum in minimizing hardware complexity while maintaining the required bit-error rate and throughput performance needed to support the variety of data services, such as video, audio, and text/graphics that the Infopad requires.
