René J. van der Vleuten was born in Valkenswaard, the Netherlands. He received the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands, and the Degree of Chartered Designer in the field of Information Technology from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Delft University of Technology.
Since 1995, he has been with Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven, working on compression of digital audio, images, and video. He recently worked on audio compression using psycho-acoustic models, lossless audio compression for the Super Audio CD, and image compression for embedded memories.
Dr. van der Vleuten is a member of the IEEE and the AES. He has authored or co-authored 4 journal papers and more than 20 conference contributions. He is Vice Chairman of IEEE Benelux Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD). He has been awarded the second prize in the 1990 IEEE Region 8 Student Paper Competition for his work on controlled ALOHA.
Rene contributed the optimal retransmission backoff control method for controlled ALOHA systems, as well as the automatic retransmission backoff control for the ALOHA animation.
